This is completely true, and it is the same advise given to me by an auto technician of almost 40 years. You can say synthetics "only expose" leaks, but if it leaks with synthetic and not with mineral than it's a pretty small difference in my mind. In cars with 150,000+ miles you are likely to have to replace practically ALL the seals simply to switch to synthetic. You can say that plenty of people haven't had any leaks, but I've dealt with it first hand. Running synthetic from the start has clear advantages, but in a car that old the gains are pretty marginal. Better to keep using oil the works fine rather than invest in a bunch of new seals you probably wouldn't need simply to switch to marginally better oil for the likely short remainder of your cars life. After all, once a car hits 200k using mineral oil as opposed to synthetic is most likely the least of your concerns.
