In NY you would probably have no problems wearing a veil, it's the most diverse city in the world (not even a guy on a gorilla suit would get many glances there), but I wouldn't generalize that behavior to the rest of the US: I am quite sure that a "letterbox woman" would get a lot of crap in the Bible belt.
