I don't think Obama "needs" this; he is doing fine as it is. Democrats and Independents think he has greater skills when it comes to the economy and he showed in his first debate that he knows a thing or two about how to handle the Middle East situation. While this kind of speech is nice, don't forget that it can turn some people off as well. People who won't vote for Obama because he's black aren't likely to changes their minds because of this.
