I think evangelicalism is just one of the tools employed in the dumbing down of America, rather than its cause. I believe there has been a conscious effort to produce an ignorant and incurious populace. Give the people soundbites instead of substance, american idol instead of American history and civics - it is easy to manipulate an uninformed electorate into voting against its own interests. Get us riled up with emotional appeals instead of issues and we won't notice that we're being robbed of our wealth and our liberties.
